Starting to code can be a very daunting task. Here are a few tips to start your coding journey.
I find what works for me was to figure out what I want to do online before learning the hows. For instance, if your aim is to create a website, ask yourself in greater details about this website you want to create. What are the functions? What can web visitors do with the website? If your aim is to create a game, ask yourself what kind of game you are looking to create.
If you have no aim, then create an aim. Be it creating a web app, creating a game, or creating a website… learning is only simpler with a goal.
Don’t try to solve all things at once. For example, if creating a portfolio website is your major aim, break down into smaller parts what you desire your website to function. Are you looking for a contact form? What content do you want to add to the website? Will the website be a blogging platform as well? After writing down these questions, slowly try to answer them first.
You’ll then find out that there are numerous amount of platform you can choose for your website. Some examples: Squarespace, WordPress and Blogger.
And then you’ll find out that upon narrowing down your challenges, the biggest question you’d like an answer for is, “How do you create a simple webpage?”
If this is your first time stepping into the coding world, I suggest you try out a few free courses. There are numerous out there but my two favourites are Freecodecamp and w3schools.com. Try them out and see how you feel. Another suggestion from me is, try to use them to answer the questions you have for your project. It makes learning more enjoyable this way and I personally thought it was more fruitful and I understand the language easier.
It’s normal if you struggle even after your first few coding lessons. DON’T YOU GIVE UP after the first try. Keep going. Keep coding for a few days each week or maybe a few minutes every day. Only give up after trying them out for 2 -3 months. Nothing comes easy. Everything (even life!) is a struggle so it is not fair to give up after the first try. You must keep.on.going!
These two coding languages are the easiest and the very basic intro to coding.
Stay tuned for my future post where I will discuss my experience with Freecodecamp, W3Schools and other coding courses I have taken.
